No. 17: Kentucky Horse Park

Bluegrass Romance No17

We’ve lived in Lexington for little over a year now, but have not done much to plug into the beautiful horse world that surrounds us. Shame on us, right? Everyone knows the World Equestrian Games are coming to Lexington this fall–and we are psyched, but our personal excitement about the games stems from the hope of renting our house during WEG so we can go to Mexico. Alas, we may not belong in the Bluegrass, for we have proved ourselves neither horse, nor basketball, fanatics.

A lesson on Ritual & Play from the Yogi Parenting course I’m doing reminded me of the importance of incorporating one-on-one play in the time we hang out with our kids. (Mommy and Daddy get date night for one on one time, and kids crave one on one time with their parents too). Since my husband was spending the day rock-climbing in the Red River Gorge with a friend, I decided to take Lucca on a Mother-Son date to a place that has long been on the list of things to do/see in Kentucky.

Bluegrass Romance Mini-Mission No. 17 took Lucca and I to the Kentucky Horse Park.

We roamed all around the beautiful grounds.

We caught the tail end of show (bummed we missed the vaulting) and and pet some horses.

We found the kids play area and stayed put for a good hour. We ate our picnic lunches in the grass and then Lucca learned how to do the Monkey Bars all by himself.

The Kentucky Horse Park calls itself “an educational theme park”. I can see why– there are museums to explore and exciting events to attend. But what I loved most about our day– on top of the romance of being around gorgeous horses– was how I got to concentrate just on my little man. We were in no hurry, the sun was out, and it was early enough on a Saturday so there weren’t any crowds. We got to share our own little adventure going someplace new, and in that alone memories were made.

At the end of our excursion Lucca said, “Mom, I love going on dates with you.” And that, folks, made the $16 ticket price worth it.

I’ve lived in Kentucky all my life and I haven’t been to the Horse Park yet so don’t feel too bad. You’ve inspired me though. I might now! :-)
